Mikulov and sights

Historic square

Today´s appearance of the centre of the town originates from last decades of 16th century. In the first half of the 17th century, a number of renaissance houses were built here, most of them preserved nearly unchanged till the present day. The most important of them include the U rytířů (Knights´ - corner house No.11), the so called Kanovnický dům (Canon´s house - house No. 4), fountain with the Pomona statue with the horn of plenty and baroque Holly Trinity Statue of 1723-1724. The historic centre of the town has been declared urban reserve.

Dietrichstein Chateau

Monumental chateau complex of baroque appearance in dominant position over the Mikulov town

Dietrichstein Sepulchre

St. Anne´s Church built in 1623 originally hid the Holly Cottage, the model for the Prague Loretta.  After destructive fire of 1784 only the peripheral walls of the main nave of the church remained undamaged. Its monumental facade built on the basis of a project by the famous architect Johan Bernard Fischer of Erlach, the designer of the SchönbrunnPalace in Vienna, eluded the danger. In the middle of the 19th century, the ruin of the church was rebuilt into the family sepulchre in which 45 coffins with Dietrichstein family member remains are still resting on.

Kozí hrádek (Goats’ Castle)

Earlier (in the 15th century) it controlled the strategic paths connecting Brno and Vienna, thus providing for due protection.

Svatý kopeček (Holy Hill)

For the extensive occurrence of protected and rare plant and animal species the territory has been declared nature reserve. You can find the St.SebastianChurch, belfry and other sacral objects of the Way of Cross.

Turold Caves

Belong to the largest and most important caves of the Pálava Hills. The length of all corridors, halls and domes exceeds 1km. The cave is distinguished with its „Turold-style“ decoration and with the largest winter refuge for bats.

Historic Jewish Quarter

The origin of the Jewish community in Mikulov can be dated with the period after 1421, when Jews were expelled by Duke Albrecht V. Habsburg from Vienna and Lower Austria and part of them found refuge in the nearby Mikulov. The life of not only the Jewish community, but the town as a whole was significantly affected by the large fire of 10 August 1719, when the whole Jewish quarter was burnt down. Following the new building of Ghetto another fire came on 22 April 1737. At that time the Mikulov Jewish quarter with its 600 settled families was the largest in Moravia and later the number grew even further. Thanks to the major social changes in the mid 19th century the Jews became equal too and so they could freely acquire property and move house. The changes resulted in arrivals of new Jewish families from the overcrowded Ghettos in Brno and Vienna. In 1848 the Jewish community became a separate entity with its own Mayor and administrative authorities, to be cancelled in 1919. Since then the Jews and their quarter became part of the town. The end of Jewishness in Mikulov came with World War II.  The Jewish quarter in Mikulov was never renewed again.

Jewish Synagogue

The synagogue dates from mid 16th century and is the only preserved synagogue of the Polish type in Moravia.

Jewish Cemetery

The large Jewish cemetery in Mikulov is one of the most significant monuments of its kind in the country. The oldest survived tomb stone dates from 1605. Today it contains around 4,000 tombs. The most valuable and the most frequently visited section is the RabbisPeak with tombs of Mikulov and Moravian regional rabbis.

St. Venceslas´Church

The church was erected in the place of the former earliest Romanesque church whose existence is assumed since late 12th century. The core of the present building of the church comes from 15th century.

St. John the Baptist´s Church

The Baroque church, part of the PiaristGrammar School, founded by František of Dietrichstein in 1631. You can find beautiful painting by the leading Baroque painter F. A. Maulbertsch of mid 18th century here.

St. Sebastian ´s Church

St. Sebastian Chapel on the Holy Hill (Svatý Kopeček) is a remarkable dominant of the Mikulov skyline. The church was constructed thanks to František of Dietrichstein after a large plague epidemic sweeping Mikulov in 1622. The new church, consecrated to the patron saint protecting against plague, St. Sebastian, was the destination of the symbolic pilgrimage with the Way of the Cross.

Eastern Christian Church of St. Nicolas

First as evangelic church, St. Nicolas´ Church, built in the neo-gothic style in 1903, was used by German Protestants until 1945. After their departure the church began to dilapidate until in second half of the 90´s of the 20th century it was purchased by the Eastern Christian Church transforming it into functional Eastern Christian Church.
